AN INTERVIEW WITH OUR YOUTH LEADERS

HAT HARWOOD

When did you become a Christian?

When I was 6.  It was a Sunday morning and I heard my rents praying and asked them what they were doing…and then I prayed that God would come into my life…and I’ve never seen my dad so proud!

When were you baptised (water & spirit)?

I was baptised in water when I was 12, which my best friend.  And I was baptised in spirit…Probably the same year at a youth camp

What is your favourite place to chill?

My rents house infront of the tv playing sims or facebooking!

What are you doing with your time at the moment?

At the moment I’m trying to clean up the church office and the Smithy, which is proving a very difficult task!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Exercise, painting, writing, singing, playing games

What do you plan to do after this year?

Either go to Uni, or to a third world country.  I’m leaving it up to God

What do you think is the most important quality a youth leader should have?

Be able to have a friendship with the youth, but also, to be a shining light

What do you think the worst characteristic a youth leader could have?

Not putting the youth first

Where do you think Cowfold’s youth group is “going” this year?

I think it’s going to grow, friendships will be built, and the youth will become shining lights to friends

What do people need to do to come to youth?

Get in touch with any of the youth leaders (hat@weald.org) or look at the youth programme online and turn up…you will be more than welcome and your bravery will be very much noticed!

JAK HOLLAND

When did you become a Christian?

Being brought up in a Christian family, I think that becoming a Christian is the point at which your faith becomes your own and not just your parents. That was a slow process for me, taking about a year or so when I was 12/13. I had a very good youth leader and I experienced God at Soul Survivor in ways that I will never forget.

What’s your favourite food?

I love food! Chinese or an Indian takeaway has to be the best. But then I love most meat and wedges are tasty too.

When were you baptised (water & spirit) and who baptised you in water?

I was baptised on July 1st 2007 in Henfield by Simo (my old youth leader) and my dad. I think I was first filled with the spirit when I was 12 or 13 at Soul Survivor.

What is the place you feel most relaxed?

Watching a film sitting in an armchair next to the fire.

What do you plan to do after this year?

Probably go to University to study psychology and eventually become a psychologist.

How long have you been a youth leader and what do you do to be the best youth leader you can be?

I have been a youth leader for over two years now and try my best to listen to what the youth group is telling me about how it is going and what they think about our leadership.

Who are the top two influences in your life?

In my life Simo (my old youth leader) has probably been one of the greatest influences. At the moment it is probably Andrew Wilson, his teaching on the mission of God has heavily impacted my thinking over the last 6months.

Who can come to Youth Group and how?

Youth is normally on a Wednesday night, we normally follow the format of; two weeks of group discussion about all sorts Christian issues and then one week we have a “social” evening. Any one from year 7 to year 13 is more than welcome to come. Just looks at our programme on the youth website and turn up. It would probably be easier to come on a social evening so you can get to know everyone but it is totally up to you.
